Františka Plamínková

During the Christmas break, my friends and I decided to swap the festive quiet for a touch of historical inspiration with a visit to the National Museum. Our primary objective was the exhibition dedicated to Františka Plamínková, a figure who left an indelible mark on Czech history. We chose her for both a practical and personal reason: as we are set to study feminism this coming March, we agreed that the best way to approach the subject was to return to its roots and learn as much as possible about Plamínková's legacy.

For us, Františka Plamínková represents a fascinating blend of courage and intellect. As a politician, journalist, and champion of women's rights, she managed to secure advancements that we now take entirely for granted, such as women's suffrage and the abolition of mandatory celibacy for female teachers. Walking through the exhibition and seeing period documents alongside her personal belongings helped us realise that feminism is not merely an abstract textbook term, but a story of real individuals who dared to defy the status quo.

This visit has provided the perfect springboard for our seminars in March. Rather than memorising dry facts, we gained an insight into the life of a woman who ultimately paid the highest price for her convictions. We left the National Museum feeling that understanding the history of one's own movement is essential to comprehending the present, and we are already looking forward to applying these insights to our upcoming classroom debates.
